FarmWizard "Magic" on 1000 cow dairy herd
FarmWizard's largest dairy customer describes his experiences of FarmWizard| “Simply magic!” is how Steven Innes of Drumduan Farm, Nairn describes his new herd management system from FarmWizard. The Innes family at Drumduan have been in the dairy business for over 50 years now and in recent times have seen their milking herd grow rapidly from 150 cows in 2003, to almost 1,000 today. “Even at numbers of 150 the paperwork associated with running a successful dairy was time consuming,” explained Steven. “As you can well imagine the amount of paperwork and manual recording has grown, along with the herd, so that today it amounts to an almost full time job from AI services, scan results, medicines purchased and administered, culls, dry offs and relaying information to the milk recorder never mind registering calves or completing the movement book!” he added. A rotary parlour system installed in 2003, taking 32 at a time, is responsible for the huge operation of milking, and along with a team of 8 eastern European workers this task is completed 3 times daily beginning at 3.30am and finishing at midnight. | He continued, “since the FarmWizard system was introduced, the dairymen and myself, now record all of this on the handheld PDA, there and then, so no information is lost or forgotten, allowing me to keep an almost paperless record keeping system. However, as well as being able to record, I can also pull up information on any animal on the farm such as due date for repeat, scan, dry off or calf as well as individual cows most recent milk records and all previous tests.” And its not just FarmWizard’s herd management that’s saving time on Drumduan Farm. The field recording facility allows for effective recording of the 1,000 acres of barley and wheat also kept and managed by Steven’s brother Stuart. Because FarmWizard already knows the animals and their details, the system can calculate the nitrogen loading for that farm based on its size and soil type and although not a NVZ, Stuart still uses the FarmWizsard PDA to record all field activity whether its sprays, fertilizers or slurry applications. Through linking with BCMS, Holstein UK, and CIS, as well as provide a simple field recording system, FarmWizard offers Drumduan Farm a complete solution. |
