FarmWizard goes Scottish
FarmWizard is covered in this weeks Scottish Farmer| This week award winning beef producer Jim Brown of Gaindykehead Farm Airdrie, laid high praise on the FarmWizard service in his “Farmer’s View” section of the Scottish Farmer. Jim, who writes a monthly piece for the Scottish publications, Opinion is now 6 weeks into using the FarmWizard system, which is replacing the vast quantity of paperwork he once kept. The following are extracts from The Scottish Farmer; Farmers View article entitled Computerisation Culture Shock! I am going through a culture shock! All my farming life I have done budgets and costings, using only a calculator, pen and A4 sheet of paper, which has allowed me to do all that was necessary to run a successful; business – or calculate how something was not going to be successful. The reason for the culture shock is that with the increasing numbers being handled today compared with 10 years ago, and every increasing time office bound, completing paperwork from passports to costings the next generation has persuaded me to change from a paper based system on a clip board to a hand-held computer at the cattle handling crush linked to the computer in the office. It is at least 10 years ago since the 1st computer arrived in the farm office to do the accounts by the farm bookkeeper for out accountant. Up until the other day I have avoided it like the plague refusing to touch a keyboard or any of the buttons on it. | Well I have succumbed at my age to PDA, which is no bigger than a mobile phone. It holds all the information on every animal on the farm. For example I can walk to up a feed passage and all I have to do is tap in the tag number and up on screen comes every bit of information I require such as when I bought it, the cost, weight, age – you name it, I have it! So as of last week I am on a sharp learning curve on how to tap in ear tag numbers at the crush then into the office, plug into the computer and out comes all the information I require to enable me to have passports ready for each relevant group However I have to tell you we have been researching this project for a year with two other computer services walking away admitting they could not provide what we wished. Thanks to son in law Wallace Hendrie who found this young Irish outfit called Wizard who have a farming background, which makes it much easier for them to understand exactly what was necessary. |
