Fertility Benchmarking

Fertility has a major impact on financial performance and on labour inputs through the impact on herd calving pattern. Recent research in N. Ireland carried out by ARINI, Hillsborough has highlighted the variability in dairy herd fertility. Benchmarking your herd fertility performance is the first step in understanding how you can increase your herd profitability through improving fertility.
To enable farmers to benchmark their herd fertility performance, a new computer database application is being developed by Greenmount Campus, CAFRE and the DARD Biometrics team. The application has been developed in conjunction with FarmWizard.com the Online Herd Management System. Farmers will be able to benchmark their herd fertility performance by manually entering calving dates, service dates and pregnancy diagnosis results onto the application through the Rural Portal (www.ruralni.gov.uk) or by uploading the relevant data from FarmWizard. |
Herd Fertility Benchmarks
Farmers will be provided with fertility benchmarks indicating their heat detection efficiency in terms of submission rates and heat detection rates. Conception rates to first and subsequent services will also be calculated. Overall fertility performance will be assessed in terms of 100-day in-calf rates and projected herd calving intervals. The financial impact of herd fertility will be calculated based on projected calving intervals and the number of animals potentially being culled not-in-calf at the end of the breeding season. This new Dairy Herd Fertility Benchmarking system will be launched early in 2006. Greenmount Campus, CAFRE is also interested in discussing the application with other commercial software providers who wish to provide the opportunity for their customers to benchmark their fertility performance through this application.
