FarmWizard launches Beef Performance Management System at Balmoral Show
 
Following on from its highly successful launch with milk producers in November 2004, Agri-IT company FarmWizard.com is unveiling a new service at this years Balmoral show which is designed to meet the needs of Northern Ireland beef producers.
“Given the changes within the CAP, beef producers will have to rely on the market place to maintain profitability. This means becoming more efficient, something that can only be achieved by those farmers who have a complete grasp of their costs allied to the performance being achieved by their stock,” explained FarmWizard’s Mark Elliott.
“And it is exactly this information which the beef performance management system can provide in a straightforward, convenient and farmer friendly way.”
“A herdowner can either upload or download information by way of his phone while he is out with his stock,” explained Mark Elliott.
“FarmWizard allows farmers to print and notify markets and abattoirs of upcoming movements, removing the need for filling in and posting permits. It has a DARD accepted Herd register which means that producers no longer need to keep a paper copy of their herd book. It is even possible for the farmer to download movements from APHIS i.e. after they buy and sell animals into their herd register. What’s more our new beef management service will notify farmers by text message whenever animals are reaching 30 months old.
He added:
“A key attraction of the system is the fact that there is no requirement for clients to purchase CD ROMs and upload software onto their PCs. Everything is done by way of the internet – including initial registration.” 		One local beef producer already using FarmWizard is Portadown farmer Hampton Hewitt.
“We are finishing cattle the year round and have always found record keeping by way of maintaining paper files difficult,” he reports.
“As a means of improving this situation, we recently started using FarmWizard and the improvements have been both instant and dramatic. We can now keep track of cattle at the push of a button. Information on cattle such as live weights can be fed into the system by way of a mobile phone and the analysis required in terms of daily liveweight gains etc provided almost instantaneously.”
“He added:
“We can also easily interface with the APHIS On-Line system in order to keep our herd records fully up to date. And because the system is web based we don’t need to have the software downloaded onto our own computer. FarmWizard is working for us and I would heartily endorse its use on any progressive beef finishing unit!”
Last year the FarmWizard.com service was accepted onto the DARD “Increasing access to ICT” scheme which saw beef and milk producers funded by DARD onto the service. Manus McHenry, the “Increasing Access to ICT scheme” project manager said that following an evaluation by DARD, FarmWizard was found to be both innovative and a genuinely useful tool for milk and beef producers.
